Jonathan Broxton signs one-year deal with Kansas City

The news that Jonathan Broxton(notes) has signed with the Kansas City Royals may not qualify as a huge shock, but it definitely comes as a healthy surprise.

First reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the one-year deal is worth $4 million and is still contingent on the beefy right-handed reliever passing his physical. MLB Trade Rumors says 10 or more teams were interested in Broxton's services, but the Texas Rangers were the only team named that figures to be a serious contender in 2012.
It's a great deal for Broxton as he leaves a Los Angeles Dodgers team that didn't have much appetite for him after seven years of employment. Four million is not an insignificant amount of money and the 27-year-old will be well-paid as he tries to prove that he can return to the dominance he showed for the Dodgers between 2006 and 2009.
For the Royals, the risk is a lot bigger. If Broxton can return his strikeout rate close to the 11.8 K/9 he accrued over those four years mentioned above, then $4 million is a bargain, especially in this current market. But Broxton threw just under 13 innings in 2011 and had elbow surgery in September. His return to the top is far from guaranteed and $4 million isn't play money for a small-market team like the Royals.
If Broxton does get healthy, though, his presence would open some options for the Royals, since Aaron Crow(notes) and Joakim Soria(notes) are already aboard. Whether that means an already-mentioned move to the rotation for Crow or exploring a potential return for Soria, the Royals have a chance to parlay this into a very nice situation. - http://sports.yahoo.com

Chili Davis becomes A’s hitting coach under Melvin

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—Bob Melvin and Chili Davis have remained close friends since their days as teammates with the San Francisco Giants as young major leaguers.Twice before, Melvin had expressed interest in hiring Davis as his hitting coach—in Seattle and again with the Arizona Diamondbacks. They have golfed together and gone mountain biking.Davis is on Melvin’s staff at last, hired Saturday as Oakland’s hitting coach to complete the Athletics’ staff heading into 2012.

“I do understand this is a business. Bobby and I have been friends for a very long time,” Davis said from his home in the Phoenix area. “I feel very comfortable having him as the guy that’s running the show on the field for us. It’s good to know you’re working for someone you’re familiar with, who’s a friend and he has your back and you have his back also.”

Melvin took over for the fired Bob Geren in June and went 35-35 after the All-Star break and 47-52 overall while dealing with key injuries to the starting rotation. He received a three-year deal late in the season to continue as the club’s manager. The A’s (74-88) went a fifth straight year without a winning record or playoff berth since being swept in the 2006 AL championship series by Detroit.Davis plans to get to work right away making contact with players, meeting in person with those who are already in Arizona.

Oakland has a pair of switch-hitting starters, Jemile Weeks and Cliff Pennington, who stand to learn plenty from Davis.“The biggest thing I’ve learned the last two years is the most important thing they look for is that you really care and you’re going to be consistent with what you say to them and that you really are paying attention,” Davis said.Davis spent the first seven of his 19 major league seasons with the Giants, who selected the Jamaica native in the 11th round of the 1977 draft. Returning to the Bay Area to work under Melvin was appealing.

Pujols, Reyes, Fielder, Wilson offered arbitration

Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Jose Reyes were offered salary arbitration Wednesday, guaranteeing their teams two extra draft picks next year if they sign with new clubs.

Teams offered 26 players arbitration, of which six were Type A free agents. A new club signing one of those premier players would lose a top pick in June's amateur draft, and a team that offers arbitration and loses one of those players would get two extra selections as compensation.Pujols (St. Louis), Fielder (Milwaukee) and Reyes (Mets) received offers, along with Boston designated hitter David Ortiz, Texas left-hander C.J. Wilson and Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins. They have until Nov. 30 to accept.

The Phillies declined to offer arbitration to right-hander Roy Oswalt, the only Type A player turned down.
Reliever Jonathan Papelbon, the eighth Type A player, already has left Boston to sign a $50 million, four-year deal with the Phillies. The Red Sox will receive draft-pick compensation for losing Papelbon.San Diego offered arbitration to closer Heath Bell, who had been a Type A player but was reclassified under Tuesday's labor deal. If he signs elsewhere, the Padres will gain two draft picks, but Bell's new club won't lose any. Also in that category are relievers Ryan Madson (Philadelphia) and Francisco Rodriguez (Milwaukee), outfielders Michael Cuddyer (Minnesota) and Josh Willingham (Oakland), and second baseman Kelly Johnson (Toronto).

Also offered arbitration were Padres pitcher Aaron Harang, Chicago White Sox left-hander Mark Buehrle, St. Louis right-hander Edwin Jackson, Yankees right-hander Freddy Garcia, Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez, Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena, Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez, Red Sox right-hander Dan Wheeler; Twins outfielder Jason Kubel; Oakland outfielder David DeJesus; Pittsburgh first baseman Derrek Lee; Toronto right-handers Frank Francisco and Jon Rauch; and Blue Jays catcher Jose Molina.- http://www.usatoday.com

Indians bring back OF Grady Sizemore

LEVELAND (AP)—Even as other teams made him offers, Grady Sizemore knew there was only one that made sense for him.

He still belonged with the Indians. “I wasn’t ready to say goodbye and move on,” he said.
On Wednesday, the Indians re-signed Sizemore to a one-year, incentive-based contract, bringing the oft-injured former All-Star outfielder back for another chance to become the electrifying player whose career has been derailed the past three seasons by injuries and surgeries.Sizemore’s journey into free agency didn’t take him every far.

Although there were “good offers from good organizations,” Sizemore decided to stay with the one that has patiently waited for him to get healthy.“They know me better than anybody,” Sizemore said. The Indians, who last month declined a $9 million option for 2012 on Sizemore, will pay him a base salary of $5 million next season. The 29-year-old can make another $4 million based on plate appearances. The deal also includes an awards package that includes $500,000 if Sizemore is selected comeback player of the year. The performance bonuses max out with fewer plate appearances than Sizemore had in any season from 2005-08.

Sizemore has undergone five surgeries, including a microfracture procedure on his left knee, the past two years and has only played in 210 games over the last three seasons because of injuries. But the Indians are confident that a healthy Sizemore can help them contend in the AL Central“We’re obviously optimistic,” said general manager Chris Antonetti. “We know that when he’s been on the field, he’s been a very productive player. We know it’s not going to be for 155 or 160 games per year, but we feel optimistic Grady will get back to the point that he is a very good player for us.”Following the World Series, the Indians cut ties with Sizemore by declining the option for next season, making him a free agent for the first time. Antonetti flew to Arizona to personally meet with Sizemore and explain the team’s reasons for letting him go. Antonetti said the team was not closing the door on Sizemore and the Indians would gladly re-sign him—at the right price.- http://sports.yahoo.com

Adding Nathan pushes Feliz to Rangers’ rotation

The signing of Nathan and reassignment of Feliz might also portend the departure of left-hander C.J. Wilson, the Rangers’ ace and free agent who, as the Nathan news broke, was preparing to dine with front-office members of the AL West-rival Los Angeles Angels.

Wilson, the most attractive starting pitcher in a shallow free-agent class of arms, likely is pricing himself out of Texas, where the rotation without him is Colby Lewis, Derek Holland, Alexi Ogando, Matt Harrison and, now, Feliz.

Primarily a starter through the minor leagues, Feliz prepared through much of last spring training as a starter. By opening day, however, he had returned to the ninth inning. He struggled in the middle of the season but was dominant the final two months. He then was six for six in postseason save opportunities before Game 6 of the World Series, when he came within a strike of delivering the Rangers’ first championship before the St. Louis Cardinals came back.

The long view of Feliz within the organization was as a starter, even as he totaled 74 saves in a little more than two seasons, and at just 23 years old. Also, Feliz was devastated by the events of Game 6, refusing to address reporters after the game.

So, while this was the plan all along, the timing of the role change worked out as well. The Rangers are particularly adept at converting relievers into starters, in the past two years having worked the same routine with Wilson and Ogando.

Free agency left the Rangers with their pick of ninth-inning free-agent options, among them Ryan Madson, Francisco Rodriguez, Francisco Cordero and Heath Bell.

They went with Nathan, who turns 37 on Tuesday, for a guaranteed $15 million over two seasons and a third-year option. After missing 2010 because of Tommy John surgery, Nathan was in and out of the closer’s job in Minnesota until the second half, when he finished 23 games, saved 11 of them, had a WHIP of 1.000 and an ERA of 3.91.

Wilson, 31-15 over the past two seasons, or since he became a starting pitcher, has drawn interest from at least a half-dozen clubs in free agency. Along with the Angels, who have been quite aggressive, Wilson’s agent has heard from the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals, among others. - http://sports.yahoo.com

Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman killed

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP)—Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death early Monday and his brother was arrested as a suspect, Dutch police said.

Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels said police were called to a home in the port city in the early hours of the morning and found the 24-year-old Dutch player bleeding from a stab wound.

The officers and ambulance paramedics were unable to resuscitate Halman.

Wessels said the officers arrested Halman’s 22-year-old brother. She declined to give his name, in line with Dutch privacy rules.

“He is under arrest and right now he is being questioned,” Wessels told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “It will take some time to figure out what exactly happened.”

No charges have been filed in the case.

Halman hit .230 in 35 games and made starts at all three outfield positions for the Mariners in 2011 before being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Mariners Chairman Howard Lincoln, President Chuck Armstrong and general manager Jack Zduriencik paid tribute to Halman on behalf of the club.

“Greg was a part of our organization since he was 16 and we saw him grow into a passionate young man and talented baseball player,” they said in a statement. “He had an infectious smile that would greet you in the clubhouse, and he was a tremendous teammate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg’s family.” - http://sports.yahoo.com

 Hawks capture 2011 title

FUKUOKA — The Fukuoka Softbank Hawks had been waiting for this for years.

Eight seasons of disappointment and heartbreak, all forgotten in the second it took Tadashi Settsu to get strike three past Kazuhiro Wada and officially put the Hawks back on top.Toshiya Sugiuchi threw seven shutout innings, and the Hawks put enough runs on the board behind him to defeat the Chunichi Dragons 3-0 in Game 7 to capture their first Japan Series title since 2003 on Sunday at Yahoo Dome."I'm exhausted," Hawks manager Koji Akiyama said. "But it was a great series. Chunichi is a great team. We are fortunate to come out on top."

Softbank won everything that was placed in its path this season. The Hawks captured the interleague title, the Pacific League pennant and PL Climax Series title before winning a back-and-forth Japan Series against ChunichiThe Hawks flipped the script in the series finale, becoming the only team to win at home. Softbank benefited from a bases-loaded walk in the third inning, catcher Katsuki Yamazaki's RBI single in the fourth and Seiichi Uchikawa's run-scoring hit in the seventh."It's good we won the series in Fukuoka before our home fans, and I want to thank all the fans here and the Hawks fans throughout the country," Akiyama said.
The last time the Hawks were crowned champions they were still under the Daiei umbrella and Akiyama was named the MVP.

Dragons edge Hawks; series tied 3-3

Chunichi win sets stage for decisive seventh game to crown Japan Series champion

FUKUOKA — Standing on the brink of elimination, the Chunichi Dragons couldn't afford to lose.

So their ace pitcher made sure they didn't.Kazuki Yoshimi was dominating on the mound, Kazuhiro Wada provided all the offense with a two-run triple in the first inning, and the Dragons edged the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks 2-1 in Game 6 of the Japan Series on Saturday at Yahoo Dome."I told you, right? If we won, we would have another game, and if we lost, that would be it," Dragons manager Hiromitsu Ochiai said. "We won, so there will be another game tomorrow. It's that simple."The Dragons evened the series at three games apiece, meaning the title will be decided in Sunday's winner-take-all seventh game."Tomorrow will be the final game of 2011, and the winner will be the champion," Ochiai said. The Dragons should like their chances in Game 7, given that the road team has won all six games of this year's Japanese Fall Classic.

"This series has been very strange in that the visiting team has won every game, and I hope that will hold tomorrow," Ochiai said.Yoshimi didn't leave anything to chance on the mound as he sliced through the Softbank lineup."I went out tonight knowing we could not lose," Yoshimi said. "I got the lead in the first inning before I even went to the mound, so that made me relaxed and confident."Yoshimi threw 7⅔ innings of one-run ball, walking none and striking out eight. The Hawks had no answer for the Chunichi ace, who allowed five hits and at one point retired 12 straight batters. He was relieved with two outs in the eighth by Hitoki Iwase, who was on the mound for three outs before yielding to Takuya Asao, who retired the final batter to record the save.

Pitching carries Hawks to third straight win

NAGOYA — For three nights, the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks were extremely rude house guests to the Chunichi Dragons.

Now that their first Japan Series title since 2003 is within reach, the Hawks won't exactly be rolling out the red carpet when they get back home either.Hiroki Yamada threw six shutout innings, and a three-run eighth put the game out of reach, as the Hawks beat the Dragons 5-0 in Game 5 of the Japan Series on Thursday to sweep all three games at Nagoya Dome and move within a win of the title.

"I was very nervous before the game but got more and more comfortable as the game moved along, especially since I was working with a lead," Yamada said after his first Japan Series appearance. "I am very happy to have won my first Japan Series game. It is something I will never forget."

The Hawks lead the series 3-2 and can finish things off with a victory in Game 6 in Fukuoka on Saturday. That is, if they can manage to win at home in a series where thus far, the visiting team has won every game.
"You never know in baseball," Hawks manager Koji Akiyama said. "This is one series where home field has so far not been an advantage, but I hope that changes in the next game."The Dragons are hoping things stay the same when the teams meet at Yahoo Dome.

"This is very disappointing and embarrassing to lose all our home games," Chunichi manager Hiromitsu Ochiai said. "We are obviously at a disadvantage now and will do our best to win the last two in Fukuoka. That is all we can do."Softbank's triumph spoiled Ochiai's final home game. Ochiai was informed in September that he would not be retained after his contract expires at the end of the season.

Hitoshi Tamura drove in a pair of runs with a single in the eighth, while Nobuhiro Matsuda and Toru Hosokawa also recorded RBIs.Softbank had trouble turning their hits into runs early on, which left it up to Yamada to keep the Dragons at bay."I appreciate that I was given the opportunity to be on the mound in such an important game like this," Yamada said. "I tried to enjoy it as well, I heard the loud chants for the opponents while I pitched, but I tried to look at it as a good thing for me and got them out."

The 23-year-old lefty limited Chunichi to three hits and struck out five without walking a batter or allowing a runner past second. For the third straight game, the Dragons couldn't overcome their shortcomings at the plate. They were shut out and managed just five hits. Masahiro Araki's sixth-inning double represented the only time Chunichi put a runner in scoring position.Dragons starter Chen Wei-yin took the loss, and was charged with five runs on nine hits over seven-plus innings.- http://www.japantimes.co.jp

Hawks beat Dragons, extend series to at least six games

NAGOYA — The Japan Series has gone from a best-of-seven to a best-of-three.

Hiroki Kokubo's RBI single in the first inning and reliever Masahiko Morifuku's Herculean effort in the sixth helped the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks hold off the Chunichi Dragons for a 2-1 victory in Game 4 of the Japan Series on Wednesday at Nagoya Dome."This was a really tough game," Hawks manager Koji Akiyama said. "We had just enough to get by and hang on for the win."

Softbank's win evens the series at 2-2 and means the teams will play a sixth game on Saturday in Fukuoka. The silver lining for Chunichi is that the road team has wonevery game thus far."We lost again tonight, but the series is still tied at two games apiece," Dragons manager Hiromitsu Ochiai said. "We'll be OK and will try to get the last two wins needed for the championship.Hawks starter D.J. Houlton began the sixth with a 2-1 lead, but gave up a single to Masahiko Morino and a double to Tony Blanco before walking Kazuhiro Wada to load the bases with none out.

The left-handed Morifuku was brought in to pitch and Ochiai sent in righty Masaaki Koike to pinch hit for the left-handed hitting Kei Nomoto. The move put three consecutive right-handed hitters in Morifuku's path."I knew it was a tight jam, but I had the confidence I could get us out of it," Morifuku said. "I followed (catcher Toru) Hosokawa's lead and just threw the pitches he called. I felt a lot better after getting the first out on a strikeout."Morifuku responded to the challenge by striking out Koike. He gave up a flyball to shallow left against the next batter, Ryosuke Hirata, but Seiichi Uchikawa made the catch after a long run to hold the runners. Morifuku then retired Motonobu Tanishige to end the threat."I had a lot of confidence in Morifuku, that he could get us out of the bases-load, no-out situation," Akiyama said. "He was brilliant."The Hawks lefty remained in the game and threw a scoreless seventh.- http://www.japantimes.co.jp

Kimbrel, Hellickson chosen rookies of the year

NEW YORK (AP)—Spotless through the summer, Craig Kimbrel struggled in the stretch. The newest NL Rookie of the Year intends to learn from a particular late-season blemish.

The Atlanta Braves’ closer unanimously won the award Monday, with Tampa Bay pitcher Jeremy Hellickson(notes) emerging from a talented crop to take the AL honor.

“It definitely did surprise me,” Kimbrel said on a conference call from his vacation in Hawaii. “I expected it to be close.”

The AL Cy Young Award will be announced Tuesday. Detroit ace Justin Verlander(notes) is expected to easily win.

“He’s the best pitcher in the game,” Hellickson said.

Kimbrel set a major league record for saves by a rookie with 46. He earned all 32 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and outpointed Braves teammate Freddie Freeman(notes).

The hard-throwing righty was dominant for much of the year and chosen as an NL All-Star during his streak of 38 straight appearances without allowing a run. But that string ended in mid-September and the 23-year-old Kimbrel was wobbly as the Braves frittered away a 10 1/2-game lead in the NL wild-card race.

Kimbrel’s eighth blown save of the year came in the final game of the season, when he walked three, gave up a hit and allowed the tying run in the ninth inning against Philadelphia. The Phillies went on to win in the 13th, costing the Braves a spot in a one-game playoff against St. Louis for the wild-card slot.

“I blew many saves throughout the year. It just so happened that one came in the last game of the year with everything on the line,” he said. “My control was not there, I was all over the place.

“I’m going to get over it, but I’m not going to forget it,” he said. “I need to fix it.”

Kimbrel struck out 127 in only 77 innings and anchored Atlanta’s outstanding bullpen, pitching 79 games. He was 4-3 with a 2.10 ERA, and his long scoreless span covered 37 2-3 innings. - http://sports.yahoo.com
