Jonathan Broxton signs one-year deal with Kansas City
The news that Jonathan Broxton(notes) has signed with the Kansas City Royals may not qualify as a huge shock, but it definitely comes as a healthy surprise.
First reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the one-year deal is worth $4 million and is still contingent on the beefy right-handed reliever passing his physical. MLB Trade Rumors says 10 or more teams were interested in Broxton's services, but the Texas Rangers were the only team named that figures to be a serious contender in 2012.
It's a great deal for Broxton as he leaves a Los Angeles Dodgers team that didn't have much appetite for him after seven years of employment. Four million is not an insignificant amount of money and the 27-year-old will be well-paid as he tries to prove that he can return to the dominance he showed for the Dodgers between 2006 and 2009.
For the Royals, the risk is a lot bigger. If Broxton can return his strikeout rate close to the 11.8 K/9 he accrued over those four years mentioned above, then $4 million is a bargain, especially in this current market. But Broxton threw just under 13 innings in 2011 and had elbow surgery in September. His return to the top is far from guaranteed and $4 million isn't play money for a small-market team like the Royals.
If Broxton does get healthy, though, his presence would open some options for the Royals, since Aaron Crow(notes) and Joakim Soria(notes) are already aboard. Whether that means an already-mentioned move to the rotation for Crow or exploring a potential return for Soria, the Royals have a chance to parlay this into a very nice situation. - http://sports.yahoo.com
