Cleveland Indians right-hander Derek Lowe doesn’t think his sore back is serious, and lefty David Huff will miss time with a hamstring injury.

The 38-year-old Lowe left Thursday’s start after three innings with tightness near his right ribcage. He said he felt better and he doesn’t expect to go on the disabled list for the first time in his career. Huff’s injury drops him from competition with right-handers Jeanmar Gomez and Kevin Slowey for the fifth rotation spot. Cleveland sent seven players to the minor leagues Friday. Left-hander Nick Hagadone and infielderRuss Canzler were optioned to Triple-A Columbus. Reassigned to minor league camp were catcher Luke Carlin, infielder Andy LaRoche, leftyChris Seddon and right-handers Chris Ray and Robinson Tejeda.

Tigers 3B Cabrera gets medical clearance to play

Detroit Tigers star Miguel Cabrera was cleared Tuesday to play again, more than a week after a bad-hop grounder broke a bone beneath his right eye.

5357529.bin (600×400)

The third baseman is expected to return to the lineup within a couple of days, although manager Jim Leyland hasn’t committed to the exact date the AL batting champion will play.
“That’s not good news. That’s great news,” Leyland said before the Tigers played the Houston Astros.
The Tigers open their season April 5 at home against Boston. Leyland emphatically said that if Cabrera is healthy, he will start at third base and bat third. Cabrera has been out since being hit in the face on March 19. The ball off the bat of Philadelphia’s Hunter Pence caused a gash that needed eight stitches and left some discoloring under Cabrera’s eye. Cabrera was examined early Tuesday at Watson Clinic in Lakeland, Fla., and it was determined there was no structural damage that would hamper him.
“The nice part about it is I don’t have to worry about the medical part of it,” Leyland said. “I saw him this morning and had a nice conversation with him. I think he felt comfortable the whole time. I don’t think he was worried like everybody else was.”
Cabrera led the majors last year with a .344 batting average. He also hit 30 home runs and had 105 RBIs for the AL Central champions. Cabrera was hitting .433 in 13 games this spring before he was hurt. The 28-year-old Cabrera is making the switch back to third base this spring after playing first base for the Tigers for four years. Cabrera shifted across the diamond this spring to make room for new first baseman Prince Fielder.

Indians work out Vladimir Guerrero

Free agent outfielder Vladimir Guerrero has worked out for the Cleveland Indians in the Dominican Republic.
out185.jpg (185×149)
Guerrero, a .318 career hitter with 449 homers in 16 major league seasons, was looked at by Indians scouts on Monday at the team’s baseball academy.
ESPN Deportes first reported Guerrero’s workout. The Indians have been looking for a right-handed hitter for months to improve a lineup that struggled to score last season. It’s not known how interested the Indians are in the 37-year-old Guerrero, a former MVP and nine-time All-Star. If he showed he can still play the outfield, Cleveland would be more likely to sign him than bring him in as a platoon designated hitter with Travis Hafner, a left-handed hitter. Guerrero knows Indians manager Manny Acta from their days together in Montreal’s organization.

Chris Carpenter returns to Cardinals’ camp

St. Louis pitcher Chris Carpenter has returned to the Cardinals’ spring training camp, with manager Mike Matheny still unsure when his ace will be back on a mound.

Chris-Carpenter-confident-of-overcoming-Yovani-Gallardo-in-NLCS-Game-3-MLB-Update-103692.jpg (514×390)
Carpenter, who has yet to pitch in a spring training game, underwent four days of tests last week in St. Louis to determine the cause of a nerve ailment that has weakened his throwing shoulder. Matheny thinks the right-hander will have to rest.
“I’ve been there before,” Matheny said Monday. “When I had the concussion stuff they were flying me all over the country trying to get me to this specialist and that specialist, and sooner or later I just said: Enough, hopefully you guys have the information you need. He understands the process, but it’s kind of grueling as far as the poking and prodding.”
The 37-year-old has not faced hitters since batting practice on March 3. A bulging disk in his neck originally was thought to be the cause of the problem.
The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner was 11-9 last season, then went 4-0 in the postseason as the Cardinals won the World Series. He threw 273 1-3 combined innings between the 2011 regular and postseasons. - http://sports.yahoo.com

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain is to be released from the hospital Sunday, three days after dislocating his right ankle bouncing on a trampoline.
New York general manager Brian Cashman announced the news before the Yankees’ game against a Detroit Tigers split squad.
Chamberlain was hurt while playing with his son Thursday at a recreation spot. He needed surgery for the injury in which bone broke through the skin.
Cashman says Chamberlain will be in a nonweight-bearing cast for six weeks. There is no timetable for when the 26-year-old right-hander can resume pitching. - http://sports.yahoo.com

Joakim Soria has elbow damage

Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria has damage to his right elbow, and general manager Dayton Moore said the right-hander might need Tommy John surgery.

31soria.533.jpg (533×304)

Moore made the comment to the Kansas City Star before Soria underwent a follow-up exam Tuesday with elbow specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles.

"We'll see what that reveals," Moore told the Star on Tuesday, "but maybe so. It's unfortunate. Joakim is such a professional person, and he's obviously hurting right now. Let's hope for the best. If it needs reconstruction, let's hope for a good outcome."

Soria had Tommy John -- also known as reconstructive elbow surgery -- in 2003 to replace the same ligament he injured in Sunday's Cactus League game against Cleveland. He left after retiring only one of five batters he faced and said after the outing that his elbow felt "really bad."

Soria has been one of the best relievers in the American League since his rookie season of 2007, but his performance fell off last year. His ERA jumped to 4.03 and he had 28 saves, but lost the closer's job at times. - http://espn.go.com

Phillies say Utley is doubtful for opening day

Chase Utley is doubtful for opening day because of problems with both knees.

That assessment comes Monday from general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. At first, the five-time All-Star second baseman was believed to have problems with just his right knee.
Utley hasn’t played in a game this spring because of his condition, which forced him to miss all of last spring and the first 46 games of the regular season. He is leaving camp to see a specialist.
The Phillies already are without Ryan Howard. The former MVP is recovering from surgery on his left Achilles and is unlikely to return before June. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Jeter out until Tuesday with injured left calf

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Derek Jeter will be out until Tuesday because of a stiff left calf, an injury the Yankees’ shortstop says is “not that big of an issue.”

derek-jeter.jpg (500×333)

New York manager Joe Girardi announced the news before Friday’s spring training game against Washington. Girardi says he wants to avoid unnecessary risks. Jeter spent time on the disabled list last season with a right calf injury.
“It’s really not that big of an issue, seriously,” Jeter said. “Just sore. Nothing out of the ordinary, I don’t think. Things happen at spring training. One of the things with spring training is you have extra days.”
Rremembered what happened last year even through it was a different calf, so I’m just being cautious,” Girardi said.Jeter first felt the soreness in Wednesday’s game against Toronto. He went through a full workout Thursday, but stayed off the field Friday.
Others sitting out the game with the Nationals because of injuries include catcher Russell Martin and outfielder Nick Swisher—both with groin injuries. Swisher could play Saturday. Martin will miss at least a couple days.
Pitcher Freddy Garcia has a bruised right hand, which remains wrapped. He is expected to miss his next scheduled start in a minor league game Monday. - http://sports.yahoo.com

Mets 3B Wright has rib tear, expected for opener

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP)—David Wright’s left rib cage injury has been diagnosed as a muscle tear, but the New York Mets third baseman said he’ll be ready by opening day.
Wright returned to camp Wednesday after receiving a cortisone shot Monday in New York. The injury occurred during a fielding drill early in camp and he hasn’t played in a spring training game this year.
Wright is expected to resume baseball activities Thursday. He said he just needs about two weeks to prepare for the season, which starts April 4.
“I think I’m past the difficult part,” Wright said. “Now it’s just a matter of getting back in the swing of things and making sure that I can get back on the field as soon as my body will allow me to, and then get some at-bats.”
Last week, he had been fielding grounders and running, but not hitting.
Wright said the cortisone shot was the best way for him to get on the field faster, but had the injury occurred during the season, he might have remained in the lineup. He played through the back injury for a while last season before finally getting a diagnosis.
“It wasn’t so much a sharp pain. It’s just more of an uncomfortable cramp,” Wright said of his rib cage injury. “This would have been one of the times where I would have hoped that I could have played through it, but it doesn’t make any sense doing that now.” - http://sports.yahoo.com

Mets manager Terry Collins said after Saturday’s 8-2 loss to Washington’s split squad that Wright wasn’t ready to play yet.
Wright has not played in a spring training game this year. The All-Star third baseman has taken groundballs, but has not thrown or swung a bat.
Mets team doctor Struan Coleman will travel to the Mets’ complex in Port St. Lucie to examine Wright and determine the next course of action. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Chris Carpenter’s sore neck could cost him his opening-day start

St. Louis Cardinals righthander Chris Carpenter has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday because of his ongoing neck pain, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Carpenter-dealing-with-neck-stiffness-OQ147TLV-x-large.jpg (490×360)
As a result, Carpenter’s scheduled opening-day start could go to co-ace Adam Wainwright, who will make his first start Friday after his recovery from Tommy John surgery last spring.
Carpenter, whose throwing session Friday was canceled, left the team’s camp Friday morning to get a second opinion, according to the newspaper. He returned a few hours later but did no throwing.
Prior to camp, there was some concern about how Carpenter’s workload in 2011 might affect him this season. Including the postseason, Carpenter, 36, threw 273 innings in 2011.
In 34 regular seasons starts last season, Carpenter was 11-9 with a 3.45 ERA. He started six times in the postseason, including twice on short rest and three times in the World Series. - http://aol.sportingnews.com/

Accused stalker of Yankees GM due in court Weds.

NEW YORK (AP)—A woman charged with extorting $6,000 from New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman may be about to find out what a grand jury thinks of the case.

Louise Neathway (NEETH’-way) is scheduled to be in a Manhattan court Wednesday to learn whether she’s been indicted. Her lawyer didn’t immediately return a call this week.
Neathway is being held on $300,000 bond on grand larceny, stalking and other charges. She denies allegations of threatening to damage Cashman’s reputation to get him to pay her.
Neathway is a British native. She also goes by Louise Meanwell.
She has a history of arrests on similar charges. A Manhattan judge last month reinstated one of those cases, a 2010 harassment allegation. It had been on track to be dismissed if she avoided rearrest. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Crawford shut down by wrist, opening day unlikely

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP)—Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford will be shut down this week to let his left wrist heal and it’s unlikely he’ll be ready to play by opening day.
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Monday that Crawford would held out for five to seven days because inflammation. Crawford had surgery on his wrist in mid-January.
Coming off a disappointing season, Crawford was an early arrival at spring training this year. He had been throwing and swinging a bat but had to limit his activities last week after he developed soreness in his wrist.
“He was examined and determined that he should curtail his swinging and his throwing,” Valentine said.
The Red Sox begin the season April 5 at Detroit.
“The opening day thing is probably not realistic,” Valentine said. “It’s not the calendar. He’ll be ready when he’s ready.”
“As we talked about before he got here, and we’ve reiterated that Carl loves to do a lot of stuff and it’s probably not in his best interest at this time to overdo it. It’s more work than his wrist needs at this time,” he said.
Crawford had career lows with a .255 batting average and 18 stolen bases in 2011, the first season of his seven-year, $142 million with Boston. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP)—Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria was hit by a pitch during an intrasquad game and has a bruised right hand.

The Rays said precautionary x-rays Thursday were negative. The three-time All-Star third baseman was struck by a pitch thrown by reliever Matt Bush.
Manager Joe Maddon said Longoria was hit in the fleshy part of the hand. The player was examined by a trainer before leaving the game and returning to the club’s spring training clubhouse.
“It’s just a bruise,” Longoria said in a statement released by the Rays. “It’s sore, but getting hit by a pitch is part of the game. The x-rays were negative and that’s good. Now it’s day to day and we will see how it feels tomorrow. At this point, we just need to get the swelling out of there.”
Longoria batted .244 with 31 homers and 99 RBI’s last season, helping the Rays make the playoffs for the third time in four years. - http://sports.yahoo.com
