Nats prospect Solis out for year with elbow injury

VIERA, Fla. (AP)—The Washington Nationals have lost top pitching prospect Sammy Solis for the season because an elbow injury.
solisknuckler-natsinsider-blog.jpg (800×533)
Washington general manager Mike Rizzo said Tuesday that Solis needs major surgery on his left elbow.
The 23-year-old Solis split last season between Class A teams in Hagerstown and Potomac. He felt pain during the Arizona Fall League but there were conflicting opinions on whether he needed Tommy John surgery. Washington hoped he could get through the injury with rehabilitation and invited him to spring training as part of their accelerated development program.
But the pain returned during a throwing session last Friday. Rizzo says the ligament-replacement operation will be performed in Los Angeles next week by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who did the same procedure on Washington pitchers Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Darvish gets going

NEW YORK — Yu Darvish, with his shaggy, orange-tinted hair and a dark goatee, was the center of attention for fans, media and teammates alike Thursday as he worked out with the Texas Rangers.
Yu-Darvish.jpg (800×1000)
At 194-cm, the Japanese pitcher has quite a presence even before considering that the Rangers spent more than $107 million this winter to land him.
"It's definitely not normal," Darvish said. "Even now, am I the type of player who should get all this attention? I still don't know."
The team's prize offseason pickup looked comfortable in his new surroundings on the first day for pitchers and catchers at Surprise Stadium, where dozens of Japanese reporters arrived early to record the right-hander's every move. - http://www.japantimes.co.jp/

Hanson back in uniform, 1st time since wreck

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP)—Tommy Hanson is back on the field for the Atlanta Braves, his first appearance in uniform since a car wreck.
tommy_hanson_medium.jpg (306×228)
Hanson did some light throwing in right field at Champion Stadium on Sunday, supervised by the training staff. He’s coming back slowly after sustaining a concussion Monday when his car blew a tire on the way to the first official workout of spring training. Hanson’s vehicle went down an embankment, leaving him with a bump on the head and some bruises.
The right-hander says he’s fully recovered from a shoulder injury that limited him to 22 starts last season. He went 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA and is expected to be one of the key pitchers in the Braves’ rotation. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Oswalt still evaluating his options for 2012

The agent for Roy Oswalt says the right-hander is still evaluating his options and plans on pitching in the major leagues this season.
roy-oswalt271.jpg (512×387)
Oswalt became a free agent when Philadelphia chose not to pick up his $16 million option for this season. The 34-year-old three-time All-Star was 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts for the Phillies last year.
Agent Bob Garber says Thursday in a statement, “`After much thought and careful consideration, Roy has decided to continue to evaluate his options. He is great health and will continue to stay in shape, while throwing regularly off the mound. Roy has every intention of pitching for a contending club at some point this season.”
Oswalt is 159-93 in 11 seasons with the Houston Astros and the Phillies. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

La Russa in talks to work for MLB

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP)—Tony La Russa says he’s talked to Commissioner Bud Selig about working for Major League Baseball in some capacity.
larussa.jpg (300×302)

La Russa, who retired as a manager after guiding the St. Louis Cardinals to the World Series title last year, was visiting with the Detroit Tigers at spring training Tuesday. La Russa is good friends with Tigers manager Jim Leyland and has a longstanding relationship with general manager Dave Dombrowski.
La Russa was vague when talking about what he might do for MLB but said he would not be taking Joe Torre’s old job as executive vice president of baseball operations.
He said he’d be working with Selig but he’s “not sure how official the commissioner wants to make it.” - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Manny meets Moneyball, signs deal with A’s

Last week, Billy Beane took a relatively surprising and sizable risk for some offense, committing four years and $36 million to Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

108696932_crop_650x440.jpg (650×440)

On Monday, the Oakland GM made a move that was a little easier to see coming, signing 39-year-old Manny Ramirez to a minor-league dealworth about $500,000.
Ramirez, of course, will have to sit out the season's first 50 games if he makes the big-league team. He'd be eligible to play in his first game on May 29 in Minnesota, one day before his 40th birthday.
The A's signing a value-laden contract with a veteran superstar on the wrong side of his career is nothing new, of course. Frank Thomas, Hideki Matsui, Nomar Garciaparra and Mike Piazza have all logged time at the Coliseum over recent years. Signing Manny may be a risk on a few different levels, but if he's going to produce anywhere and not cause much of a stir it'll be with a team that doesn't receive as much media attention as others.
What's interesting to me, though, is that Ramirez is feeling the baseball jones enough that he's willing to get out of bed for a $500,000 contract. Then again, with guys like Johnny Damon, Vladimir Guerrero and Hideki Matsui still on the market, he really had no choice but to price his services low. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Giants will go as far as Buster Posey carries them

The last time Brian Sabean’s Giants were in the top half of the National League in runs was 2004, when Barry Bonds won his seventh and last MVP award.
111537376_crop_650x440.jpg (650×440)
Since, their rank among the 16 NL teams has gone like this: 15, 11, 15, 15, 13, 9 and, in 2011, 16.
Yeah, yeah, AT&T Park. Well, in the past seven years the Giants averaged 12th in scoring on the road and, believe me, AT&T’s coverage ain’t that good.
As you can see, the one time they threatened the top half of the league in runs scored – 2010 – they held a parade.
Of concern recently (and, granted, it’s a moving target) was the outfield, where the Giants received almost no production in 2011. Indeed, their right fielders OPS’d 14th in the league, despite 44 games of a .323 batting average and .920 OPS fromCarlos Beltran.
So in a winter in which they wisely endeavored to lock up starting pitchersTim Lincecum and Matt Cain on long-term deals (succeeding with neither), the Giants also acquired outfielders Melky Cabrera andAngel Pagan, who will mix in with Brandon Belt andNate Schierholtz, at least until Belt replaces Aubrey Huff at first base. If Huff plans on producing anything like he did last season, that won’t come soon enough.
Sabean had the right idea, of course. But, in trading starterJonathan Sanchez to Kansas City, he sold low in order to acquire an outfielder who just had a career year for the Royals, but the season before carried a .671 OPS. Pagan, from the New York Met for Ramon Ramirezand Andres Torres, will provide speed, but only if he cracks the Belt-Cabrera-Schierholtz outfield and hits well enough to play every day.
The Giants on Friday signed Ryan Theriot, which set up a three-way competition at shortstop (with Brandon Crwford and Mike Fontenot).
Bottom line: The Giants passed on the biggest bats of winter. In fact, they passed on most of the mediocre bats as well. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield retires

After 19 seasons in the majors -- 17 of them with the Boston Red Sox -- knuckleballer Tim Wakefield announced his retirement from baseball Friday afternoon.

d9d3808b10a65deb80810f2aa15e3035.jpg (960×540)

"This has been the hardest thing I've ever had to do, so it's with a heavy heart that I stand here today," Wakefield said, pausing to regain his composure. "And I'm saddened to say that I have decided to retire from this wonderful game of baseball."

Wakefield's announcement came at a 5 p.m. ET news conference at JetBlue Park, the team's new spring training facility.

"I'm very grateful I've been able to put this uniform on for such a long time and to win two World Series for this great city and I can finally say it's over," the 45-year-old said.

Wakefield walks away with 186 victories with the Red Sox, just six short of the team record shared by Cy Young and Roger Clemens. He recorded his 200th career victory late last season.

Wakefield had said toward the end of last season that he wanted to return for his 18th season with the Red Sox, but as the winter wore on it became clear he was not in Boston's plans.

The team extended him an invitation to spring training but did not guarantee him a roster spot. Had Wakefield accepted, he likely would have competed for the fifth spot in the rotation.

The Red Sox extended a similar invitation to captain Jason Varitek, who has spent the past 15 years with the team. It remains unclear whether the soon-to-be-40-year-old catcher will take them up on the invitation, sign elsewhere or retire. - http://espn.go.com/

Hall of Famer Gary Carter dies at 57

Gary Carter, the Hall of Fame catcher whose single for the New York Mets in the 1986 World Series touched off one of the most improbable rallies in postseason history, died Thursday. He was 57.

gc171415--300x300.jpg (300×300)

Carter was diagnosed with four brain tumors last May, two weeks after finishing his second season as coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University. In recent months, the family hoped that, with chemotherapy and other treatments, the tumors were in check. But in January, the family revealed that doctors found several new tumors on Carter's brain.

Carter made a last public appearance at the beginning of February when Palm Beach Atlantic opened its season.
The effervescent Carter, nicknamed "Kid," was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003 after retiring in 1992. The 11-time All Star finished his 19-year career with a .262 average, 324 home runs and 1,225 RBIs.

Carter played nearly two decades with the Mets, Montreal, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He led the Expos to their only playoff berth and was the first player enshrined in Cooperstown wearing the Expos logo.

With curly, blond locks flaring out from beneath his helmet, and a rigid, upright batting stance, Carter was immediately recognizable at the plate.

He was especially enthused during the biggest moment of his career. The powerful Mets were down to their last chance in the '86 Series against the Red Sox when Carter stepped up with two outs. No one was on base and New York was trailing Boston 5-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6. - http://espn.go.com/

Kosuke Fukudome, White Sox agree to $1M deal

CHICAGO (AP)—Four years later, the Chicago White Sox finally signed Kosuke Fukudome—and for a fraction of the price he cost the Cubs.

kosuke-fukudome.jpg (300×200)

The outfielder agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract that guarantees $1 million. He will get a $500,000 salary this year, and the White Sox have a $3.5 million option for 2013 with a $500,000 buyout.
Now 34, Fukudome joined the Cubs for the 2008 season with a $48 million, four-year contract.
“We were aggressive,” White Sox assistant general manager Rick Hahn said. “For reasons that I think he fairly clearly outlined at the time, he decided to go with the opportunity on the North Side over ours.”
With the Cubs, Fukudome could remain in right field. The White Sox had Jermaine Dye in place at the time.
An All-Star in 2008, Fukudome was traded from the Cubs to Cleveland last July 28 for outfielder Abner Abreu and pitcher Carlton Smith. Fukudome hit .262 with eight homers, 27 doubles and 35 RBIs last season. He has a .260 average in the majors with 42 homers and 191 RBIs.
Chicago views Fukudome a left-handed hitter who can play center and right.
“We’re not looking for this guy to come in and completely change his approach,” Hahn said. “We just want him to be the player he’s proven to be over the last four years.” - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Alderson: ‘Big fundraiser tonight for gas money’

NEW YORK (AP)—Even Mets general manager Sandy Alderson can’t resist pointing out the team’s financial difficulties.
09bats-1-blog480.jpg (480×319)

The team tweeted Thursday afternoon that Alderson had started a Twitter account (at)MetsGM.
Alderson’s first tweet: “Getting ready for Spring Training-Driving to FL but haven’t left yet. Big fundraiser tonight for gas money. Also exploring PAC contribution.”
Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Alderson was playfully responding to a New York newspaper that pointed out the GM was driving to Port St. Lucie—Horwitz said Alderson drives because he takes his dog.
Alderson then added in a second tweet: “We’re driving to St. Lucie because our dog (Buddy) doesn’t like to fly. His complaint: Where I sit, no lights and no stews.”
Coming off their third straight losing record, the Mets have cut payroll by about $25 million since the start of 2011. A trial is scheduled next month on the lawsuit filed by the trustee seeking to recover money for victims of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme. He is seeking $386 million, claiming the team’s owners were net winners from their investment. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Jose Canseco to try out in Mexico

Former MLB All-Star Jose Canseco will try out with the Quintana Roo Tigers of the Mexican League, the team announced Sunday.

roids_canseco.jpg (625×422)

"Back in baseball I knew I would play this year you just gotta believe in your dreams," Canseco wrote Sunday on Twitter. "Leave on redeye tonite to start spring training with AAA quintana roo tigers tomorrow . TEam won league championship last year."

Canseco, 47, last played in the majors for the Chicago White Sox in 2001.
The Mexican League is part of the MLB's minor league system at the Triple-A level, but its teams are not affiliated with individual major league clubs. The defending champion Tigers play in Cancun.
Tigers president Cuauhtemoc Rodriguez said Canseco has not signed a contract.
Canseco, the 1988 AL MVP, played for seven teams in his 17-year career and hit 462 homer runs. In 2005, he admitted to using anabolic steroids and later published a book in which he said 85 percent of major league players used banned substances. - http://espn.go.com/

Kevin Youkilis engaged

Boston Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis is engaged to marry one of the sisters of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, according to a Red Sox team source.

Youkilis first met Julie Brady, who is one of three Brady sisters, at a Patriots party after the team was knocked out of the 2010 playoffs, according to the Boston Herald, which first reported the story.
She is a schoolteacher with a 5-year-old daughter and has never been married, according to the newspaper. In 2008, Youkilis had a marriage ceremony with Enza Sambataro, who had dated Ben Affleck, but the pair reportedly never filed the necessary paperwork to make the union legal. They split up two years later.
Sources tell the Herald that Youkilis was at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to watch the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.
"He's really lucky," an unnamed friend of Youkilis told the Herald. "She's a really nice person, but all the Bradys are nice people." - http://espn.go.com/

Oil Can says he used cocaine frequently

Oil Can Boyd, 1980s Red Sox Pitching Star, Admits Using Cocaine During Career

A beloved 1980s Major League Baseball star says he used cocaine not only a few times, but a majority of the time he was pitching.
The Boston Globe reports Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, who pitched eight seasons for the Boston Red Sox, admitted he was under the influence of cocaine two-thirds of the time he was on the mound.
Boyd has penned a tell-all book, "They Call Me Oil Can: My Life in Baseball," which will hit bookstore shelves in June.
"Some of the best games I've ever, ever pitched in the major leagues I stayed up all night; I'd say two-thirds of them," Boyd said to WBZ radio. "If I had went to bed, I would have won 150 ballgames in the time span that I played. I feel like my career was cut short for a lot of reasons, but I wasn't doing anything that hundreds of ballplayers weren’t doing at the time; because that's how I learned it.
"It was something that I had to deal with personally and I succumbed. I lived through my life and I feel good about myself. I have no regrets about what I did or said about anything that I said or did. I'm a stand-up person and I came from a quality background of people."
While drug testing is a huge issue in the sport today, Boyd says back in the 80's he was free to use any chemicals he wanted.
"I never had a drug test as long as I played baseball," he said. "I was told that, yeah, if you don't stop doing this we're going to put you into rehab, and I told them ... 'I'm going to do what I have to do, I have to win ballgames. We’ll talk about that in the offseason, right now I have to win ballgames.'"
Boyd believes despite his 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, he could have played longer had he not been the victim of racism.
"The reason I caught the deep end to it is because I'm black. The bottom line is the game carries a lot of bigotry, and that was an easy way for them to do it," Boyd said. "If I wasn't outspoken and a so-called 'proud black man,' maybe I would have gotten the empathy and sympathy like other ballplayers got that I didn’t get; like Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Steve Howe. I can name 50 people that got third and fourth chances all because they weren't outspoken black individuals."
Boyd finished his career with a 78-77 record and 4.04 ERA for the Red Sox, Expos and Rangers from 1982 to 1991. He pitched for Boston in the 1986 World Series that everyone remembers for Bill Buckner's butchering of a ground ball that helped rally the New York Mets to the championship. - http://www.thepostgame.com/

Diamondbacks GM Towers does things his way

The last time the Diamondbacks finished in first, they started the next season 20-8 and looked like the best team in baseball. Soon thereafter the fickleness of teams coming off surprise division victories struck them hard. Arizona didn’t even finish .500.

Whether these Diamondbacks are built of the same flimsy material as their 2008 counterparts or something more substantive depends more than anything on their pitching – Ian Kennedy, Daniel Hudson, Cahill and stud prospects Trevor Bauer, Tyler Skaggs and Archie Bradley – than, say, the return of Stephen Drew (out after shattering an ankle) or the predilection for D-backs starters to give up fly balls (which Kubel may chase in amusing fashion).
It all starts with the three top starters, plus Josh Collmenter and Saunders for now, and moves onto what could be the most intelligent bullpen in the major leagues. Craig Breslow: Yale graduate. Brad Zielger: Missouri State graduate. J.J. Putz: went to Michigan. All three of the other Diamondbacks’ American relievers matriculated, too. Even Saito went to Tohoku Fukushi University. Oh, and they can pitch fine as well. Especially effective in the playoffs was Bryan Shaw, whose delivery looks like Francisco Rodriguez’s and who could make himself into a fine bridge to Putz alongside David Hernandez and Saito. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Braves ditch insensitive patch on new throwbacks

It was a complete no-brainer, but props to the Atlanta Braves for placing a new crossed tomahawk logo on the sleeve of their new weekend alternates. The cream-colored throwbacks — which the baseball world learned about a few weeks ago — are based on the uniforms that the team first wore after moving to Atlanta in the 1960s.

The jerseys of those less-enlightened times featured a savage on the sleeve and it's a wonder that anyone ever thought the image was OK. The logo strips Native Americans of any humanity and turns them into a one-dimensional character devoid of any sympathy or tribute. It honestly might be the only defense that the few defenders of Cleveland's Chief Wahoo have left. ("Well, it's not as bad as what Atlanta used to have.")
Thankfully the current Braves brass made the necessary alterations before the retro resurrection so that paying tribute to the franchise's history is possible without alienating a group of people in the process. Even Hank Aaron approves.  - http://sports.yahoo.com

Marlins’ Jose Reyes has televised haircut

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP)—Along with a new uniform, Jose Reyes has a new, close-cropped look.
The All-Star shortstop had his dreadlocks trimmed during a nationally televised haircut Friday on the MLB Network.
“A little bit lighter. It’s going to take me a couple of days to get used to it,” Reyes said.
He left the New York Mets in December for a $106 million, six-year contract with the Miami Marlins. Reyes’ new team has a rule prohibiting hair below the helmet line.
“It’s going to be a little bit emotional because I spent three years with this hair. But at the same time, I understand this rule of my new team,” Reyes said before the snipping started. “I’m a team player, so I have to cut it off.”
A man who would identify himself only as Jordan from Jordan’s Barber Shop in the Bronx performed the haircut at the MLB Network studios. Network spokeswoman Lorraine Fisher said the trim will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida, which planned to auction the hair on eBay.
“One thing that I do, I wash my hair once a month,” Reyes said. “Every time I went to shower, I put a plastic bag on my hair, and David Wright (is) always making fun of me because of that. I don’t get my hair wet.”
Other players who have had to cut their hair to comply with team rules include Jason Giambi andJohnny Damon when they joined the New York Yankees. - http://sports.yahoo.com/

Brian Cashman's wife files for divorce

NEW YORK -- The wife of New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has filed divorce papers, a day after prosecutors charged a woman with stalking him and extorting money over an extramarital affair.

Her lawyer didn't immediately return a phone message Saturday. A spokesman for Brian Cashman says the family wouldn't have any comment.
On Thursday, 36-year-old Louise Neathway was charged with harassing Cashman and threatening to harm his reputation if he didn't give her thousands of dollars.
Neathway's lawyers deny it and say Cashman turned on her when their relationship ended badly.
A person familiar with the family says Cashman and his wife have been separated and living apart for a year. The person asked not to be named because of the private nature of the matter. - http://espn.go.com/

FRESNO, Calif. (AP)—Sheriff’s detectives say that an American League Championship ring belonging toChicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza has been stolen from his California home.

Yankees hire Jim Hendry

Former Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has been hired by the New York Yankees as a special assignment scout under GM Brian Cashman.

Hendry, who was the Cubs GM from 2002-11, was let go by chairman Tom Ricketts after two straight fifth-place finishes.

Cashman said he believes Hendry will be an invaluable resource.

"He can scout amateur players; he scouts pro players for us," he said. "He's as connected in the game as you can possibly be. Everybody loves this man."

Hendry, 56, worked 17 years in the Cubs organization in numerous positions, including farm director, scouting director, assistant GM and GM.

Hendry agreed to a multiyear deal with the Yankees, according to a source. Another source said Hendry's duties will include looking at minor league players, major league players and spending time with the major league team.

Under Hendry's direction the Cubs won three division titles (2003, 2007, 2008). The 2003 team was five outs away from the franchise's first World Series appearance since 1945 before an eighth-inning implosion in Game 6 against the Marlins in the NLCS. - espn.go.com/
